29. Evidence - Cats & Dogs

On paper any album with 6 Alchemist beats and 2 DJ Premier beats is always going to garner a favorable review from me. Evidence is one third of Los Angeles hip-hop group Dilated Peoples, whom I've been a bit of a fan of for a good while now. Along with his frequent work with The Alchemist, this lead me to choose this album for 'New release Mondays'.

First things first, the beat selection is flawless. Whether it's Evidence producing a track himself or he's choosing a beat from any number of talented producers, his taste is always on point. The 'Red Carpet' featuring Raekwon and Ras Kass has a slightly sped-up vocal sample, which manages to not sound like a chipmunk, and a really soulful feel, 'You' is the first of 2 Premier beats that is a bit more chilled that you'd expect from Preemo, but it's still better than most beats you'll hear this year. Also the Alchemist produced, menacing sounding featuring Dilated Peoples member Rakka, M.O.P's Lil' Fame and Terminology is a real banger.

There are a few things that are not so good though. The first thing and probably is that there are too many songs, there is no need for a hip-hop album to have 17 songs on it. There are a few interludes which add nothing to any album and probably the biggest problem is Evidences flow itself. I like Evidence but his flow is the same on every song and it never really grabs my attention for any period of time. All of the guest appearances steal every song that they are on and it's a shame that this is the case. Ultimately, fans of Dilated Peoples, Evidence, The Alchemist or any other underground L.A. rap artists will really like this. I just thought that it was OK. Still, give me this over Wacka Flocka any day....

Until tomorrow.....
